About Our Founder
Meet Blessing Bvunzawabaya
I grew up in Mutare, Zimbabwe, and tennis found me — not the other way around. It found me because of the late Mr. and Mrs. Martin, who opened their hearts and their resources so that kids like me, who could never afford to play this expensive sport, could have a real chance. They didn't have to do it. But they did. And because of them, many talented players and leaders from Mutare went on to make their mark all over the world.
That kind of generosity changes you. It changed me.
I began my college tennis journey at Seward County Community College before moving on to play at Prairie View A&M under the guidance of the late John Cochrane Jr. — another great man who poured into people. In 2003 I made Houston my home, transitioned into coaching, and today I run Strive Tennis Academy right here in Cypress, Texas, developing young athletes and teaching adults who are discovering or rediscovering this incredible sport — doing what I love every single day.
But I never forgot where I came from.
Back home, I watched kids miss school — not because they didn't want to be there, but because their families couldn't pull together the fees in time. I watched young athletes compete with the bare minimum and still show up with heart. And I kept thinking — if these kids had just a little more, they would be unstoppable.
So I decided to do my part.
With the support of David Bvunzawabaya and Pfungwa Mahefu, and after many café conversations with Tiffany and Ashley where we dared to dream out loud — Strive Beyond Borders was born. It's not just a nonprofit. It's a continuation of what Mr. and Mrs. Martin started. A legacy of giving. Of seeing potential where others see barriers. Of showing up for kids who just need someone to believe in them.
I know what one opportunity can do. I lived it. And that's exactly why I'm here.
I'm also the author of Don't Skip the Chapter — a book about resilience, purpose, and the chapters of life that shape who we become.
